Kramsch's Definition of Culture. Claire Kramsch points out: "At the intersection of multiple native and target cultures, the major task of language learners is to define for themselves what this 'third place' that they have engaged in seeking will look like, whether they are conscious of it or not (1993)."

1, taken from Thanasoulas, 2001 For instructors and learners alike, the concepts of linguistic and cultural competence must be introduced into the classroom together. Kramsch (1993, 1987a) also believes that culture should be taught as an interpersonal process and, rather than presenting cultural facts, teachers should assist language learners in coming to grips with the ‘other culture’ (Singhal, 1998). Second language teaching is viewed from the perspective that its core objective is to teach the cultural context of discourse in the target language, rather than to teach the traditional four language skills and culture as a fifth component. The discussion begins with an examination of the context of communication within the classroom, suggesting that it is affected by the subjectivity of Hadley (1993), Kramsch (1993) and Lo Bianco (2003) also provide definitions and valuable introductions set in an historical context.

to Kramsch (1993), “culture in language learning is not an expandable fifth skill (…) It is always in the background, right from day one” (KRAMSCH, 1993, p. 1). The relationship between language and culture implies working also with anthropology, philosophy, psychology and, of course, linguistics.

Identification of Social Language Learning Strategies There is a general agreement among second language researchers that teachers of second/foreign language should be prepared adequately and equipped with essential strategies and techniques. Accordingly, they attempt to explore some effective social interactional Kramsch (1993) highlights the potential social and cultural conflicts that can arise from personal meanings individual learners or teachers are attempting to convey, and the social context in which the meanings are carried. An interculturally-oriented language education recognises an inextricable language-culture connection and links home with target language-and-cultures (Byram, 1997; Kramsch, 1993; Liddicoat & Scarino, 2013; Newton, Yates, Shearn, & Nowitzki, 2010).

Different researchers, such as Kramsch (1993), Byram and Grundy (2003), and Pulverness (2003) have recently studied the relationship that exists between culture and language learning. Holmes cited in Byram and Grundy (2003) for instance shows how culture is encoded in the conceptual metaphors speakers of a language are convinced of.
